BEAR

4/24/07 Bear died peacefully in his sleep after a very short illness. We shall miss his friendly purring.....he purred until the end... Good bye Bear man, we are so glad to have had the chance to be loved by you and to love you!!

12/28/06 Bear had lived his whole life outside. A week ago his owner looked outside and noticed that he was walking in circles and just did not look right. He called Bear and when he picked him up saw that his eyes were not right and that he was skin and bones.

He took him to the vet and the vet confirmed that Bear was now blind and must be kept inside. His owner was allergic to cats, that is why he lived outside (actually he had a decent set up in the garage where he could get out of the weather and be safe). He put Bear in the basement with litterbox etc. After a week he could not take the cat being inside the house any more...his allergy was just too much. He made many many calls in the Virginia and NC areas trying to find someone who would take a 14 year old blind, ill, BLACK cat. He was told by one no-kill shelter that he should take Bear out in the woods and shoot him. He was told by several that they would take him and immediately put him to sleep.

We were his last hope. And that is why Blind Cat Rescue exists, because of cats like Bear. Ones that would be killed just because they are blind, or just because they are old and blind. We said yes, we would take him. His owner drove him to us from Virginia the next day.

Bear is ill. He has high blood pressure and that is probably what took his eyesight, but he is possibly also hyperthyroid. His owner had blood work taken the day before he brought him to us but the vet did not have the results yet. He is going to our vet Monday to get blood work read and see what we need to do to help him. Right now we are just trying to get his weight up. He is very thin. His owner had their food set up high on a cabinet for him and suddenly becoming blind, he could not get to it and obviously was not eating. He is a super friendly fellow with an immediate purr.

UPDATE 1/4/07 Bear did have hyperthyroid and had the surgery to remove it. We also got him a much needed dental done. We brought him home last night. He is doing well, has a great appetite, and seems to be happy to be inside. You touch him and he starts purring very loudly. His favorite spot is to curl up in your lap...what a love bug he is!
