Helping Blind Cats "See" a future

HEIDI

Heidi was found thin, covered by fleas and obviously homeless by an animal control officer in Texas. This wonderful lady works for an animal control facility that tries not to euthanize. They even set up at Petsmart on the weekends and do everything possible to find homes for all adoptable animals.

The word Adoptable is our problem. Heidi was deemed un-adoptable because she is blind and was going to be euthanized. Suzanne did not want to see this cat put to sleep just because she was blind and so took her home with her. Small problem, Suzanne is very allergic to cats. She started taking meds for the allergy and tried to make it work.

Living with Heidi, Suzanee discovered she (Heidi) also has a seizure disorder. Suzanne got her stabilized
and on medication. Having Heidi with her was not working with the allergies, it was becoming to much. Suzanne contacted us and asked if we would accept her, we were her last hope. Her only other choice was to take her back to the shelter that she works for and have her euthanized. She did not want that!!

Suzanne put her on a plane to us.

1/19/07 Miss Heidi is very frightened. She swats first and to heck with the questions! We at this point can't touch her in any way shape or form. Mercy! From what Suzanne told us, she never could pick her up with out gloves and it took some time before she could touch her without getting hurt. I suspect Ms Heidi is truly a feral cat who probley had a head injury that caused her blindness and seizure disorder.

8/07  She has not gotten any friendlier!  She gets along ok with the others and enjoys spending her time outside.  I think she is happy with her life except for twice a day when she has to deal with me trying to get her medicine in her.  She no longer will take it mixed in her food.

2/20/08  Today we made the difficult decision to euthanize Heidi.  Her medication was no longer working and she was having multiple seizures every day.  Increasing the dosage made her do nothing but sleep.  To make the situation worse,  Heidi is a feral cat who does not like humans.  To give her her medicine she has to be chased down with a blanket, wrapped up, hold her feet and head and force a syringe of medicine down her throat, twice a day.  She claws, bites, spits it out and fights it every step of the way.  There is no quality of life having multiple seizures or drugged sleeping you whole life.  The vet felt that this was the right decision and sadly, so did we.

Goodbye little Heidi,  I am so sorry!
