Here is an inexpensive house for feral cats. You do not have to putthe pot in the hole. Make sure there are no sharp edges.Take a long lighter and carefully melt the plastic edges.
Make sure the hole is high enough that water will not come in.An 18 gallon Tote will work for ONE cat. You can get 2 largertotes to work for 2 cats. You could also use a can of expandingfoam to fill the space between the 2 tubes to give betterinsulation. When placing the box make sure to NOT place the opening to the north or west to prevent wind/snow going in.
If you want to see other cool shelters that you can make, visithttp://alleycat.org/ShelterGallery There are many other ideas of affordableshelters. This would be an awesome program (making feral houses) for aboy or girl scout troop!
What to do if you find a cat?If at all possible, please give the cat some food and water. If you are sure the cat is homeless, and if the cat is friendly, please take the cat to your vet and have scanned for a microchip.Post found fliers up in your neighborhood. I have found tappingthem to stop signs or right below them gets them seen (although itis probably against the law in many communities). Many local newspapers will run found ads for free.Check your local Lost pet registry. There are so many, Google lost post registry and your location. See if someone has registered the pet as lost.If the cat (or your pet) needs medical care, Here are someplaces that may be able to help.
If you can not find the owner and you can not give the cat a home, contact your local animal rescues. You may find the groups in your area at http://petfinder.com If they can not take the cat (most stay full)ask if they may post the cat as a courtesy posting on their Petfinderand social media pages. Also if they do adoptions at Petsmart/Petcosee if they will allow you to bring the pet to the adoption events to see if the pet can get adopted.
To find low cost spay/neuter google it. There are so many BUThttp://www.spayusa.org is also a good resource. I will tell you that it doesnot have all of them. If you live in Robeson County NC there is free spay/neuter available. Info http://blindcatrescue.com/spay.htm

How to catch a feral cat.
There are lots of websites on how to cat stray cats. Here is a good one CLICK HERE
My experience has been to get a humane havaheart trap. You may find them at most feed stores, Tractor supply, Lowes often also has them. They run typically $35-50. When I havetrapped cats. I set the trap up some place safe and set it so it can not be set off. (Wire tie it) Place the food at the entrancethe first day, move it in to the middle the next day, get it to the back on day 3. If you give them a day or 2 to get real used to going in and out, make your appointment to get them fixed and set it to go off the night before the appointment. Take the cat in the trap to get fixed.Read the link I gave above the picture. They have some suggestions for harder to catch cats.

Snicker has to have surgery again :(He is actually doing well but his lungs still have issues. After lots of talk and examining all the optionswith the surgeons in Raleigh we have decidedto have a lung lobectomy. We have examinedall the complications of doing it verses himhaving to under go many more tests and medications.I am an absolute realist and after examiningall options, I feel this is the right one.He is having surgery on 10/13 and should behome in time for open house. Here is a video of Snicker that was takena few weeks after he came home from thehospital. You can see how shaved he is.
Snickers story: He came to us the day afterThanksgiving in 2011 from our local animal control. He had been turned in as a sick stray. He is well know for his sunny friendly personality andsmiles. You may see lots of pictures of him on his pagehttp://blindcats.org/snicker.htm
