1/2022 Mr. Betty came to us approximately the
same time of Betty White’s birthday. We though
he was a she and was named Betty. When we
discovered she was a he we decided to keep the
name and add the Mr. thus his name is Mr. Betty.
Mr. Betty came to us on a Sunday morning as the
morning staff was leaving. A FedEx truck came
down the drive way like a bat out of hades and
screeched to a stop. The young driver got out
crying with a cat that she had found on the side
of the road. She saw the cat, and bless her, stopped
to make sure the cat was in fact dead. He was not.
She found a very emaciated cat that looked like it
had no eyes. In fact they were very filled with
pus from infection and one had a huge ulcer. He
also had a horrible upper respiratory infection.
The driver said she didn’t know where to take him,
it was Sunday, she was on her route and there are
zero emergency vet clinics in our county. She
couldn’t drive 45 minutes to Fayetteville or carry
this cat all day with her. So that is how he ended
up with us. We started him immediately on
antibiotics, fluids and syringe feeding. I was in
contact by text with out vet all day. He would have
not have survived another night outside, the
temperatures we in the 20’s.
The next day we took him to the vet where he
was put in the hospital for several days. He is a
senior cat, needs a dental, we weren’t sure at
first if he was going to lose one of his eyes or not.
Right now it appears the eye may not need to be
removed. He had a feeding tube placed to make it
easier to manage his nutritional needs
and medicate him since he was not eating at this
point. It took about 2 weeks for him to start feeling
better, he finally started eating on his own and has
gained 2 pounds so far. He is a sweet old cat that
still needs more medical care before he is 100%.
We are going to let him stay with us. He will never
again find himself starving, almost dead on the
side of a road.
Mr. Betty
2 weeks after he arrived.
