Mr. Betty
2 weeks after he arrived.
Partially Blind Gender: Male Approximate age: Arrived From: St. Pauls, NC Arrival Day: January 2022 Mr. Betty came to us right around Betty White’s birthday in 2022 via Fedex! A driver was making deliveries on a Sunday saw a cat beside the road. Bless her for stopping to see if he was alive or dead. She realized he wasn’t dead but he was in awful shape so she couldn’t leave him there and picked him up. Being a Sunday, she didn’t know where else to take him and came to us since BCR is on her route. She drove down our driveway at top speed and jumped out crying with the cat in her arms. He looked to be a very emaciated cat that looked like he had no eyes. (In fact, they were closed from pus from infection and one had a huge ulcer.) He also had a horrible upper respiratory infection. We started him immediately on antibiotics, fluids and syringe feeding and were in touch with our vet all day. It was touch and go for a while and we weren’t sure he’d make it through the night. Its certain he would have not have survived another night outside in 20-degree weather. The next day we took him to the vet where he was put in the hospital for several days. Everyone, including us, thought he was a she so came up with the name Betty. But, he is a senior boy cat! To get him health again, Mr. Betty was on a feeding tube for a while to get him nutrition and medication since he wasn’t eating on his own. In addition to not knowing if he’d lose his eye or not, he badly needed some dental work, too. After two weeks of good care and lots of medication, he started eating on his own and gained some weight. It took about two weeks for him to start feeling better. We named him Mr. Betty and he is a very sweet guy with a lot of personality. Later on, it became necessary to remove his damaged eye but that hasn’t slowed him down at all. Mr. Betty will never again go through what he did before he came to BCR. He’s home. You can see Mr. Betty on our live 24 cameras in House 2, Room 2. HERE
