Ella
Gender: Female Approximate age: 9 years (as of 2024) Arrived From: St. Pauls NC Arrival Day: January 26, 2016 Ella owes her life to a former BCR employee being in the right place at the right time. Having gone to the local shelter to look for a friend’s cat, the employee instead found Ella! She knew Ella’s time was running out and ran back to BCR to ask us to take her. Of course we said yes and Ella arrived with just a few hours to spare before she was to be euthanized. We were told she had been surrendered due to family problems. When she came she was a very tiny 4.6 pounds- just skin and bones. An x-ray showed that little Ella had three broken vertebra odontoid processes in her back and they were held together just by ligaments. When Ella was healthier she was spayed and her left eye, which had collapsed, was removed. She was understandably frightened when she arrived and spet a lot of time hiding. With time, care and some BCR magic, Ella is now a fun and feisty cat who spends a lot of time high up on a kuranda! She is still feisty and can be sweet or salty in a second!
10/8/2025 Dear supporters, It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our sweet Ella has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This morning, while Alyson was feeding in Room 3, she noticed that Ella was having trouble maneuvering on the Kuranda. We gently placed her on the floor, but she was quickly in distress and lost the little vision she had left in her right eye. We rushed her to the vet, where an X-ray revealed a mass that had grown and ruptured. Despite every effort, there was nothing more that could be done. We are in disbelief, and we are so sorry. As you know, Ella’s journey with us began under heartbreaking circumstances. She was rescued from a local animal control just moments before she was to be euthanized. She was only a tiny kitten at the time—underweight, scared, with multiple broken vertebrae in her back and a collapsed eye. Thanks to your love and support, Ella was given a second chance at life. That gift is something we can never put into words, but please know how deeply grateful we are to you for making it possible. Over the years, Ella blossomed into the fun and feisty “sour patch girl” we all adored. From scolding us during cleaning routines and rearranging blankets with her unique sense of style, to swatting at ponytails to keep us in line, she made sure her personality was always known. She loved claiming the top of every Kuranda in her room, where she ruled with confidence and grace. For nine beautiful years, we had the privilege of watching Ella heal, grow, and live life to the fullest. While it will never feel like enough time, we take great comfort in knowing she was surrounded by love every single day and that she was able to experience joy, safety, and family because of you. Ella will be dearly missed, but her spirit will always remain with us. Thank you for being part of her story and for giving her the life she so richly deserved. With gratitude and love, Sam
