Felix 2.0
6/2020 Felix 2.0 has that name because Felix 1.0 was a long time
resident and passed away a few months ago. Felix 2.0 knows his
name so to keep it straight with records etc. his nick name - Felix 2.0
Felix is a 16 year old blind kitty who was losing the only home he
had ever known. He was found as a kitten by a child and taken home.
Child’s mom is not fond of animals but she allowed him to keep him.
Fast forward, child grows up, leaves home, starts his own family,
cat stays with mom. Mom decides she no longer wants the cat
son has to take him with him. Son’s wife says Oh Heck no, they have
a toddler. So he is in between a rock and a hard spot. Mom says cat
goes, wife says cat is not coming here. He loves his cat and just
wants him to be safe. Shelters will put him to sleep.
So that is how he came to be here.
All in all, he is adjusting to his new reality. Imagine how he must
feel, he is old, blind and he in one moment of time lost every thing
he had ever known. His home, His family, His friend, every single
thing he had ever knows is gone. Think how you would feel if that
was you, he does not have the ability to understand the explanation
and does not have access to alcohol or Valiums which I am sure most
humans would need if this happened to them. So all in all he is
doing ok.
He is friendly, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the
other cats he will be living with. You may see him live on his
live cat camera at https://www.blindcatrescue.com/watchus.htm
He is in Room 5
3/14/2020 Felix 2.0 came to us 2 1/2 years ago after losing his only
home after 16 years. He was found by a boy who loved him. The
boy grew up, got married and had his own family. Felix stayed
with the parents. The only problem was the mom was "not a cat
person" and Felix had become a grumpy old fellow. She told
her son he had to go. The wife said no way was he coming to
their house, they had a toddler. Felix was fast to bite and very
fast to swat with his claws. The son contacted us because he
loved Felix and he wanted him to be cared for. So that is how
he came to us.
Felix had so many physical problems with his back. He had
spondylosis with myelopathy and disc degeneration. He was in pain,
that explained why he had become such a grumpy fellow. We got
him on pain meds that helped for some time to better control the
pain but I am sure there was not a minute of the day that there
was not some pain. Each time he went to the vet the x-rays
would show the continuing deterioration of his spine.
We took him to the vet last week to see if there was anything we
could do to get him some better pain management. He was in
horrible pain, he would lay and just pee himself instead of getting
up. You touched him and he growled. The vet and I had a
quality of life discussion. We brought him home with a
super-strong med to see if that would help, this was a hail mary.
He continued peeing himself, not getting up.
He stopped eating this morning. He clearly said he had enough.
The AVMA has 5 freedoms that you must provide an animal for
animal welfare.
The freedom from hunger and thirst.
The freedom from discomfort.
The freedom from pain, injury, and disease.
The freedom to express normal behavior.
The freedom from fear and distress.
We firmly believe that they should be allowed dignity in life and death, they should
not suffer. He was suffering.
While the decision to let him go is gut-wrenching, and not one
we have made lightly, he deserves a quality of life that we and his
veterinarian strongly believe is permanently out of his reach. It
was time to do the right thing and let him go. He and I made a
last trip to the vet together and I was with him petting him as he went
over the rainbow bridge.
We are glad that we had the time to know him, we hope that he
was happy with us for the most part when he was here. He
started enjoying sleeping with some of the other cats and enjoyed
us brushing him. We will miss him.
