Blind Gender: Female Approximate age: Arrived From: Arrival Day: January 2019 Misty came to us from a hoarding situation with more than 90 cats! The homeowner’s house was being foreclosed on and several rescue groups were working hard to find the cats homes. Despite lots of obstacles, one dedicated volunteer was determined to help and she know Misty, being blind, would be hard to place in a loving home. We’re so thankful she called us. When Misty arrived, one of her eyes was already gone and the other badly enlarged with glaucoma. Her overall condition, though, was surprisingly good, despite needing some dental work. Misty was understandably frightened when she first arrived but has relaxed and now enjoys her life at BCR. Misty is a little “spicy”and can nip suddenly so her nickname is Shark! She is a beautiful loving girl and were so glad she’s living her best life at BCR. You can see Misty on our life 24-hour cameras in House 2, Room 2.
7//16/2026 Dear Supporters, It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share the shocking news that our sweet Misty has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Just a few weeks ago, we believed we were treating what appeared to be a stubborn ear infection. After her initial veterinary visit, Misty was referred to a veterinary dermatologist in Raleigh, where she was examined on July 3. The specialist confirmed an ear infection and treated her with a stronger, more potent antibiotic, and we were optimistic as we scheduled her follow-up appointment for July 31. Yesterday afternoon, however, our staff noticed swelling and discoloration at the back of her throat on the same side as the affected ear. Knowing something wasn't right, we immediately began calling the specialty hospitals we work with in hopes of getting her seen before her scheduled follow-up. Thankfully, one of our specialists recognized the urgency of the situation and was able to see Misty today. During her examination, the specialists discovered a mass with malignant characteristics. Based on its aggressive appearance and location, they felt the cancer had progressed rapidly. The only possible treatment would have involved extensive, invasive surgery followed by radiation therapy, with a high likelihood that the cancer would return. After discussing her prognosis and considering what would be kindest for Misty, we made the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully rather than put her through painful procedures with little hope of a lasting recovery. One dedicated volunteer knew that a blind cat like Misty would have a difficult time finding a home and reached out to us. We are forever grateful that she reached out. When Misty arrived, one eye was already gone, and the other was painfully enlarged from glaucoma. Despite everything she had endured, her spirit remained strong. She eventually settled into sanctuary life and found comfort, safety, and love. Many of you knew Misty by her nickname, "Shark." While she could be a little spicy and occasionally surprise us with a quick nip, those of us who knew her best also knew the sweet, beautiful girl behind that feisty personality. She was uniquely Misty, and we loved every bit of her. Because of your generosity, Misty never had to worry about where her next meal would come from, whether she would receive medical care, or if she was loved. She spent the last seven and a half years surrounded by people who adored her, with cozy beds, sunny spots to nap, and friends to share her days with. Your support made that possible, and for that, we are deeply grateful. Thank you for loving Misty alongside us. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that she left this world surrounded by compassion and dignity, after years of experiencing the life every cat deserves. Run free, sweet Shark.
