Sophie
Blind
Gender: Female
Approximate age: 12
Arrived From: Asheville, NC
Arrival Day: December 2018
Sophie was pretty scared when she first came to BCR because there had been so
many changes in her life! She was living in a sanctuary that ran into financial
difficulties. That sanctuary merged with another one and were then taken over
by a third shelter to save the lives of their animals. That shelter saved more than
85 animals! We reached out to them and offered to take Sophie. When she came,
her eyes were in very bad shape and certainly painful for her. She had endured
that for four years and we rushed her to get her eyes removed. Sophie recovered
from that ordeal and has settled into BCR very well. This beautiful girl loves people
but can take or leave other cats – she pretty much ignores them! Sophie is famous
for her one orange “toe.”

Dear Supporters,
It is with a very heavy heart that I share the unexpected news that our sweet
Sophie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Yesterday morning, I took Sophie to
the emergency veterinarian because she had not been eating well and her face
had suddenly become swollen. After a long visit and diagnostic testing, we
received the heartbreaking news that she had bone cancer in her jaw. This
diagnosis came as a complete shock to all of us. Our cats receive regular
veterinary care and yearly dental X-rays, so normally we are able to detect
issues early and prepare for what may come. In Sophie’s case, this appeared
suddenly and progressed very quickly, leaving us with very few options to
keep her comfortable.
After speaking with the veterinarian and considering her quality of life, I made
the difficult decision to let her go peacefully. Sophie was calm and
comfortable, and we were able to say our goodbyes as she rested quietly.
While it is never easy, I am grateful she did not have to endure prolonged pain.
Sophie came to Blind Cat Rescue in December 2018 from Asheville, North
Carolina, after the sanctuary she was living in faced financial difficulties and
multiple transitions. When we learned of the situation, we reached out and
offered to give Sophie a safe, permanent home. When she arrived, her eyes
were in very poor condition and had likely been painful for years. We rushed
her into surgery to have them removed, and after recovering, she settled
beautifully into life here at BCR.
Over the years, Sophie became known for her sweet nature and love of people.
She preferred human attention and often chose to ignore the other cats in her
room. She was also famous for her one little orange toe, a tiny detail that made
her extra special to everyone who knew her.
Because of your sponsorship and support, Sophie was able to live her final
years surrounded by comfort, safety, and love. You gave her the gift of a
peaceful home where she could simply be herself, and we are deeply grateful
that you were part of her life.
Thank you for loving Sophie and for helping us provide her with the care she
deserved.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Sam and the Cats
