9/7/19 This is a letter I knew a few days ago I was going to have to write, but I had hoped we would have a few more weeks before I had to do it. We took George to the vet early this week for weight loss (They are weighed every single week so we can quickly see any losses or a trend of loss) With a leukemia positive kitty this is typically the first symptom that there is a problem starting. His loss was significant in a weeks time and he was taken to the vet. Blood was done and it was not good. We were clearly dealing with non-regenerative anemia. Being leukemia positive, we knew this was not going to have a good outcome. One of the side effects of this kind of anemia is the lack of hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the body. You basically are suffocating from the inside out. There is no treatment for a cat that has leukemia that is going to fix this, it is caused by an underlying problem, cancer for instance and of course leukemia. We brought him home for a few days of loving. We firmly believe the qualify of life is the most important thing we can give the cats. Today his behavior told me we were reaching the end of quality and it was time to let him go. You will often here us say, it is better to go on a good day than a bad day.... He was loved and cared for until the end. The staff spent extra time today saying their goodbyes and holding him. I take the responsibility of having to make these decision very seriously. I promise you the vet and I have lots of conversations before we do anything. BUT I also believe that we should allow the cats to live with dignity and die with dignity. I never want to have waited so long that they are suffering a horrible death at the end. He went over the rainbow bridge quietly in my arms.George will be remember as a fun silly kitty who was able to tame Gomez. He loved to play with the laser toy, run up the walls and lived every day to the fullest. We were blessed to almost have a full year with him. He will be missed.
