Hermes
2009 Hermes was found by a gentleman that could not keep him safe inside. He really liked the little guy and knew that being blind, he couldn’t stay outside so he looked for a safe place for him to be. He contacted other shelters. They responded they would euthanize him because he was blind. He contacted us and we had him take him straight to our vet to have a full check up. Our vet says he is approx. 14 weeks old (Aug 2009) and in pretty good health. He was treated for worms, ear mites, got his first shots & was neutered. Hermes is a super sweet fellow full of purrs. He hops when he walks and gets along well with others. You may watch him live on our live cameras. He is in house 1, room 3 1/2019 Hermes has had problems with his legs for some time. He has patella instability and dislocation. It means his knee cap constantly dislocates and is painful. We finally found a surgeon that we felt could safely do the surgery to fix his knees. For him, this is a genetic defect. The surgery was successful, he is doing well with his recovery. Sponsored by Ann Mary - Thank you! Sponsored by Roger - Thank you! Sponsored by Eleanor - Thank you! A few weeks ago we noticed Hermes was losing weight (since we weigh them weekly we are able to see trends pretty quickly). He was taken to the vet and full blood work and x-rays were done. Considering his age (approx. 12 years old) we felt we were probably dealing with hyperthyroidism. The blood work ruled that out, it also ruled out diabetes. It did come back with really funky liver, gall bladder and pancreas values. An appointment for an ultrasound was immediately made. That appointment was yesterday. (Tuesday) Monday he began licking (eating?) the cat litter. Now he has developed pica. He was removed from the cat litter and crated with paper litter (he ate that too). We also called the vet. She said to bring him in tomorrow. (Tuesday) He was still losing weight at an alarming rate and now was barely eating. I am almost always present when the cats get their ultrasounds. The ultrasound doctors are very familiar with me. I expressed concern about the pica and asked for him to carefully look to see if that was causing our problems on top of all the normal things he was looking at. I so prayed that this was the problem, that was something that might be fixable. He also had a full set of chest and abdominal X- rays. The ultrasound doctor did not find evidence of a blockage from litter, but he did find free fluid in his abdominal cavity and many other signs of lymphoma with his spleen, liver and pancreas. I had 3 vets looking at the ultrasound and they all agreed with lymphoma, They also found fluid in his chest. OMG, this feels like a nightmare that I can not wake up from! We discussed many options, and none of them felt like I would be doing the right thing for Hermes. I did not want him to suffer. I decided to let him go. It did not feel like the right decision, but he was not eating, he had fluid in his chest and abdomen, he was heading towards a very very bad day very soon. Right now he was not suffocating from the fluid in his chest, YET, it was coming very soon. I sobbed as I held him and said goodbye. I promise the cats we will always try to do the best we can to care of them. His knees were messed up, he had had a double Patellar luxation, he needed therapy etc and got it so he could walk without pain again, But this, this I can't fix as easily. I feel horrible, I am really second-guessing my decision, I hope it was the right one, I did it with love, I did not want him to suffer. Hermes came to us 12 years ago after being found as a stray. He was a super friendly fellow, loved all humans and didn't have a mean bone in his body towards any of the other cats. He had a cute bunny hop walk. He touched our hearts and souls and will be so missed. I am so sorry Hermes, I pray I made the right decision.
