9/8/2021 RIP Honey - This is the letter I sent to her sponsors.
This is a letter that is breaking my heart to write.
Honey has been struggling with her health for the last few months.
We have had her at the vets with blood/x rays etc being run and still not finding what
was wrong with her. Everything was within normal limits. We made an appointment
to have an ultrasound for next week with the ultrasound doctor.
Friday she was just not herself and was not eating, She had lost almost a full pound
in 1 week... We returned back to the vet (She has been there the week before.) She
was immediately hospitalized and tests and xrays ran again. The x rays were really
strange on Friday, it appeared that she was swallowing a lot of air. Saturday they
looked more normal, Sunday they were full of air again. I asked the vet if we should
take her to Raleigh.
She felt that Raleigh could do much more extensive testing and an immediate
ultrasound etc (it is a specialty hospital) so she contacted them and got approval
for Honey to be transferred to them. (Right now in our area all vets are running very
short handed and sadly the same thing is going on with many practices in Raleigh.
They are not taking cases unless they are emergencies.) So Sunday, I took her to
Raleigh. Keep in mind, it is a holiday weekend. They did supportive care for her
Sunday and Monday. Tuesday she was transferred from the emergency department
into internal medicine.
Internal medicine went over all the reports that my vet had sent over and ran a few
tests and felt that they saw a mass in her esophagus. The plan today was a CT,
then an endoscope and then an ultrasound depending on what they are finding.
They had told me based upon the x-rays they felt they were seeing an esophageal
tumor. The vet and I talked some time about what that would mean for Honey. After
hearing the choices, I knew the right one was going to be to let her go if it was a
tumor.
The nurse called me this morning to give me an update as they were getting ready
to start her procedures. She told me that they all just loved her, she was so sweet
and everyone had spent some time loving her. She also knew what Honey was
probably facing today and promised me she would love on her before she went
under and tell her I love her and I am so sorry.
The vet called me when they were trying to intubate her for the endoscope and ran
into resistance. They put a "camera" down and could clearly see the mass. He
called me and told me the results and again discussed the alternatives but did feel
that my decision to euthanize her was the right one. This was something that we
probably could not fix, she would have had to go through radiation, chemo, and
many procedures and it would return. I absolutely was not going to put her through
that.
Some may disagree with me but my decision was made with full knowledge of what
we were dealing with and me putting what was in her best interest first. I loved her
enough to not allow her to suffer. So we let her go while she was under anesthesia.
Honey was the sweetest cat. She truly lived up to her name, sweet as honey.
She got along with everyone, never bothered a soul. She loved to play, she loved to
sit in your lap and be loved on. I spent an hour in the parking lot loving her before
they took her in on Sunday. I am so glad I got that time. She will be missed by
everyone. We were blessed to have had 8 years with her!!
I am sorry

Honey was first sent to an Animal Control facility in South Carolina as a young kitten.
She was adopted, but sadly the owners who adopted her did not want to have a cat
in the house and decided she would be an outside cat. She was soon hit by a car
which caused her to become blind. The owners originally were intending to keep her
and did get her proper medical care. Within a few months of the accident they took
her back to the Animal Control she was originally adopted from citing that their child
was allergic to cats. The Animal Control employees thought that more likely they did
not want to have an inside cat all along, and now being blind she would have to stay
inside, and brought her back for that reason. We were then contacted by them and
thankfully having the space available took her in.
Honey is a wonderfully sweet cat, loves everyone, and is known for having some of
the softest and silkiest fur around.
You may watch her 24 hours a day LIVE on her MeShare camera. She is in house room 3.
