Lisa came to us as a little kitten from the very high-kill Bladen County (NC) Animal
Control Center. When she arrived, a wonderful volunteer saw Lisa and called us right
away. When she arrived at BCR, we started treating her right away for pneumonia,
worms, fleas and hemobart. When she was healthier she was spayed. While she was
healing we had her on a feeding tube until she could eat on her own. Lisa is a very
sweet cat who has amazing inner strength that she showed from the first day. In June
2021, she showed her strength and determination again when she became dangerously
ill with an unknown infection. Despite having numerous tests, x-rays, and ultrasounds,
no one could figure out what was going on. She even spent a week in intensive care at
a specialist in Raleigh, had two plasma transfusions. When she came back to BCR she
was not well and wasn’t eating on her own so she has a feeding tube put in. After a
couple of very scary weeks back at BCR getting her body stronger with help from a
blood transfusion. Lisa turned the corner and started to improve. By the end of August
that year, she was back to normal. This infection was nearly fatal for Lisa nut she
battled back every time. It turns out the infection was E-coli and we have no idea
where it came from. We’re so grateful that Lisa is now the playful and loving cat she
always was. As we do with all the cats, we’re monitoring Lisa health closely every day
and giving her a lot of love too!

Dear Supporters
It is with a heavy heart that I write this unexpected and tearful letter. Lisa has
crossed the Rainbow Bridge. During yesterday's tour, I spoke with hopeful optimism
for her recovery. We called her a warrior, and she truly led the charge in her battle
for life. Despite all the odds, she fought with a strength that we’ll never forget.
We had placed a feeding tube in her, as she wasn’t eating enough to keep up with
the demands of her medication and nutrients. Her fecal and blood work didn’t show
any obvious cause for the diarrhea, other than an imbalance in her gut bacteria. But
today, something changed.
This morning, Lisa wasn’t herself. As you know, Wednesdays are our regular vet
days, and I fully expected to bring her home today. We ran new bloodwork and X-
rays, only to discover that her health had taken a drastic turn overnight—she had
become septic.
Lisa has always been a fighter. She had barely entered this world and was left for
euthanasia because she was too sick while her siblings were adopted. But against
all odds, she pulled through. That was when she first needed a feeding tube, and
even then, she fought, refusing to take her medication, her defiance only adding to
her warrior spirit. From that moment on, we knew her as "Lisa the Warrior Kitty."
Over the last 13 years she has faced countless battles—each one harder than the
last. Every time, she showed an incredible will to live. When I spoke to her today,
she meowed in response and tried to come toward me. That’s when it hit me the
hardest: we have fought our final battle together.
We believe deeply in letting our cats go with dignity; after everything Lisa has been
through, she deserved nothing less. Thanks to the surgeries that allowed her to live
over two more years after a major colon procedure, we were given a little more time
with her. But now, her battle has come to an end.
I called Alana, and she met us at the hospital. Together, we helped Lisa cross the
rainbow bridge, telling her how strong she had been throughout her life, and how
proud we were of her. We cried but also laughed sharing stories of her stubbornness
and antics. As she passed we told her that now she could run freely in the meadows,
the fastest cat there, without any pain or struggle.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to a warrior. However, Lisa’s spirit, her strength, and
the love she gave us will always remain in our hearts.
