Blind Gender: Male Approximate age: 12 Arrived From: Sanford, North Carlina Arrival Day: September 1, 2026 Russell’s story begins on the streets of Sanford, North Carolina, where he was found abandoned and eventually picked up by animal control. After Russell was found, people reached out to us who believed they knew some of his history. We learned that Russell had previously lived outside, in a situation where life had not always been kind to him. He deserved so much better than the life he had known. Despite everything Russell has been through, he is an incredibly sweet, loving boy. He hasn’t let his past change his gentle spirit, and we are so thankful that his days of wondering where he belongs are finally over. Russell came to us needing quite a bit of basic medical care. He had an upper respiratory infection, needed vaccinations and deworming, and still needed to be neutered. On September 9, 2026, Russell is receiving his neuter surgery. Once he has had time to recover and settle in, he will return to the veterinarian in about a month to have his eyes corrected. For now, we’re taking everything one step at a time and giving Russell all the care, comfort, and love he deserves. Once he is medically cleared, Russell will join the kitties in Room 3 and officially begin the next chapter of his life. No more streets. No more being unwanted. No more wondering if he is safe. 10/14/2026 Dear supporters, With heavy hearts, we share some unexpected and heartbreaking news. Our sweet Russell has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Yesterday, Russell underwent enucleation surgery to remove his eyes. Due to his eye abnormalities, surgery was recommended to ensure his long-term comfort and well-being. He was thoroughly evaluated and cleared for the procedure, and we were relieved to learn the surgery went well with no complications. As a precaution, we always have our cats remain overnight at the veterinary hospital following surgeries of this nature so they can be closely monitored throughout their recovery. Last night, at approximately 7:30 PM, I received a heartbreaking call that Russell was experiencing unexpected complications. I immediately went to be by his side, to comfort him, and most importantly, to make sure he knew just how deeply he was loved. Although we understand that every surgery carries risks, especially when anesthesia is involved, nothing could have prepared us for the heartbreak of losing our precious little boy. Russell's time with us was far too short, but the love, joy, and laughter he brought into our lives were immeasurable. From the moment he arrived, he began to thrive, revealing the sweetest, most playful personality. He made us smile every day with his adorable little meerkat stance, and his tiny, kitten-like meows were enough to melt anyone's heart. He had a special way of bringing happiness to even the simplest moments. It felt as though Russell had always belonged here. He settled into sanctuary life so naturally, surrounded by love, comfort, and people who absolutely adored him. We had imagined so many more years of watching him grow, discovering all of his little quirks, and seeing the beautiful life that lay ahead of him. Although we may never understand why his journey ended so suddenly, we find comfort in knowing that his final chapter was filled with love. He was safe. He was cherished. He never had to wonder whether he belonged. He was home. Because of you, Russell was loved and helped make his time with us so special. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness gave him the chance to experience the security, happiness, and unconditional love that every cat deserves.
