Sterling
Blind Gender: Male Approximate age: Arrived From: Maryland Arrival Day: 2012 Sterling is another cat from a hoarding situation. When he was rescued, he was number 27 of 39 cats! He was very ill with an upper respiratory infection and infested with lice. Before coming to BCR, he was held for 40 days at animal control to get him cleaned up and healthy. A wonderful rescue group in Maryland was helping to place the cats asked if we could take him. We said yes and a wonderful volunteer drove him to us. Sterling is a gorgeous long haired cat with a very regal demeanor. But he’s also very sweet and friendly! In 2022, developed a large mass (literally the size of a golf ball) attached to his intestines that we had removed. Pathology showed that it was cancerous. Since then, he’s seemed to do very well and we watch his health very carefully. Sterling continues to be the sweet and loving kitty he’s always been – to people and to the other cats!
Dear Sponsors, It is with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of Sterling’s passing. As I mentioned in my last update, Sterling had been receiving weekly vet visits. While the medication had made a slight improvement to his heart, his condition still needed monitoring. Last week, he had heart imaging, and while we saw some positive effects, his overall health was still a concern. This morning, Sterling refused his breakfast and showed signs of congestion. We took him to the vet, where we learned that his nasal congestion was the smallest concern overall. His bloodwork had taken a drastic turn for the worse, and his kidney values, which had been stable just a week ago, had dropped significantly. Coupled with his congestive heart failure, it became clear that his body was failing. Making the decision to let him go was one of the hardest to make, but after carefully considering his condition, we knew that giving him the peaceful passing he deserved was the kindest and most dignified choice. Sterling continued to be his happy, purring self, holding on with remarkable strength, despite his body failing him. That same spirit and resilience were what made him such a special soul, and I’m deeply thankful that, because of your unwavering support, he was able to experience the love and care he deserved in his final years. You gave him the opportunity to live in a forever home, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Sterling’s story began in 2012 when he was part of a hoarding situation. He was one of 39 cats in desperate need of help, suffering from severe illness, including an upper respiratory infection and lice. After spending 40 days at animal control to recover, a wonderful rescue group in Maryland helped place the cats, and we were fortunate enough to bring him into our care. A dedicated volunteer drove him to us, and it didn’t take long for Sterling to capture our hearts with his regal demeanor and stunning long fur. In 2022, Sterling faced another challenge; he had surgery to remove a mass on his large intestine, which involved removing most of his bowel. That surgery gave him a third chance at life, and it’s because of you that we were able to give him that time. While today is filled with sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that Sterling is now reunited with his dear friend Izzy. Imagining them together in peace eases the heartache just a little bit. Thank you for believing in Sterling and giving him the chance to live and love for just a little longer. Your support gave him a life full of care, comfort, and love, and he will always have a special place in our hearts. With heartfelt gratitude, Sam
