Meet Simba
Simba arrived at BCR in 2011. He came to us from animal control in
Raleigh. We do not know how he ended up there but we are glad
we had the opportunity to help him.
Simba is FIV+. He is also a super friendly fellow, gets along well
with the other cats and very playful.

Simba is now in the fight of his life for his health. He has
been struggling for the past month. Blood work, ultrasounds,
x-rays - all do not give us the answers. We have strong suspicion
of lymphoma but without doing a biopsy we do not have a
definite diagnosis. He has been losing weight, this weekend
he was vomiting and stopped eating. He is home with a
feeding tube while we try a last hail Mary. Unless he rallies
we will have to accept that his time with us is coming to an end.
He is so grateful to all of you that support the cats and made it
possible for him to have 6 more years of life. The shelter he
came from was a kill shelter and he was at the top of the list because
he was FIV+
Should your Cat go Outside?
Cats inside or outside is one of those subjects that many people have a
strong opinion of. There is a compromise :)
Strong reason to not let them out:
Diseases they can pick up for other outside stray cats:
Examples FIV, leukemia, distemper or upper respiratory infections.
Parasites: Although not usually life threatening, they can be picked up.
Examples: Fleas, ticks, ear mites, intestinal worms, ringworm
Parasites can be difficult to eradicate from your pets, from humans
and from your home.
Safety: The world is not always a kind place, some people have been
known to shoot cats with BB guns or arrows. Our cat crystal has 6
pellets in her from being shot by someone. Humans that do not like
cats have been known to poison loose cats.
There is also the danger of loose dogs, wild animals, coyotes, owls.
How to keep indoor cats happy
You could consider building an outside room for your cats to go out
and enjoy fresh air but still be safe. I have a small one for my cats
on my deck. Or you could cat proof your fence if you have a tall
fenced in back yard.
There are hundreds of pictures on pinterest. I thought I would share a few
of them with you. I found a great blog post someone made and
instructions how they made their enclosure. I also found many PVC
rooms for the cats that may be less expensive to make and be something
easier for people to make. I made one like these years ago at a former

You could also purchase a cover for your cats to be inside
while you are there to supervise them. This came from Amazon
Isn’t this wild? someone was very creative and their cats are outside
and happy. Look how far it goes!

When it rains it pours! Hyperthyroid again
We went years without having any one becoming hyperthyroid. They say
things go in threes, apparently with this, they are right. Manxi has developed
hyperthyroid also. She will go in 2 weeks to Raleigh to have the same
treatment that Keller & Ginny had.
Ginny had her blood retested and the treatment cured her hyperthyroid.
Keller goes next week for his retest.
This is a simple dog kennel with a tarp on top. A nice inexpensive
way to give them a place to come outside.
If you have a tall fence, you could add cat fence to the top
and let them inside your back yard. This one is really nice
you can also make less expensive ones from PVC

Meet Taffy
Taffy is a FELV+ kitty who came to live with us in 2012. She was found living
as a stray, begging door to door in a neighborhood. Some one took pity on her
and took her to the vets office. She was going to give her a home until she test
leukemia positive.
Taffy is quite the character. When she first arrived she had a strong dislike
of the other cats. We thought we would try letting her be a lobby cat. On her
first night out of the cage we had a bad thunderstorm and a near by tree was
struck by lightening. If you have ever been near a lightening strike you know
how loud that is!! Taffy was scared to death and ripped the side of a window
air conditioner and escaped! We saw her once or twice but could not recapture
her. It was winter so I did not want to try to trap her for fear of her freezing
in the trap. We always kept food down for her. A month later we were having
open house and who came out of the woods to one of the employees that was
outside on her phone? Yeap, little Taffy Houdini. Finally we had her back inside!
She has never made an attempt to go outside again.
Taffy is a funny kitty. She loves to play swat the toy with the humans. Below

Taffy is very grateful for all you do for the cats!! She gets to have a warm
home, plenty of food and car because of YOU!
