Gina
2011 Gina shows how much it takes a village to save a life. She was posted to a group on Facebook that shares daily all the cats sitting on death row in the NYC animal control facilities that will be euthanized the next day. Someone saw her and immediately posted it to us. We posted it to our Facebook page asking for someone to step up and give her a home. No one was willing to give her a home so we agreed to take her. We told them someone in NYC would have to step up to the plate, go get her and get her to us. An amazing lady named Giovanna did just that. She called us to make sure we would take her and headed to the pound to get her. A Wonderful man named Steven had posted that if someone got her to Washington DC, he would drive her the rest of the way. Giovanna went to the pound and got her, kept her over night, rented a car, drove from NYC to DC handing her off to Steven. Steven drove her the last 5 hours to us. She owes her life to them! This little lady is 9 years old and in pretty rough shape. She had never been spayed! The people who dumped her stated on the intake form that they had only had her for 1 year. Even though she almost died, dumping her at the pound ultimately was the best thing that ever happened to her. We took her to the vet, got her spayed. She had 2 huge uterine cysts removed. Removed both of her eyes. (She had no sight in them, one had completely collapsed and one was hard as a rock from glaucoma and had to be causing her considerable pain!) She got a much needed dental done. She had several rotted teeth, one with roots showing. The poor little lady had to be in so much pain! She is now home, on good pain meds, a couple of antibiotics and recovering nicely. She is very very sweet considering everything that has happened to her. I know she is grateful to be safe. You may watch her live 24 hours a day on her MeShare camera. She is in house 2, room 3. Sponsored by Jennifer - Thank you! Sponsored by Karen - Thank you! Sponsored by Giovanna - Thank you! This is a letter I knew some day I was going to have to write but you are never ready when the day comes. How do I write about saying goodbye to a cat who was my favorite? 9 years ago Gina came to as as a 9 year old kitty from animal control in New York City where she was on the list to be euthanized the next day.  Because of 2 angels she was saved from animal control and brought to BCR where she finally got the medical care she desperately needed.   The people who gave her to the pound had only had her for a year and the reason for giving her up was they just did not want her.  She is the only one that knows how many homes she had had.  I promised her she would never lose another home, she would be with us  safe, loved and cared for for the rest of her life.  I promised her I would be with her at the end.  We kept our promise. Yesterday Gina began showing extra breathing effort,  she was abdominally breathing.  I took her to the vet to see what was going on.  When the vet put the x-ray in front of me I knew we had reached the end. There was a large mass.   She was still alert and did not appear that she was ready to leave that day so I brought her home for the last day so everyone could say goodbye to her.  I planned on taking her back this morning. She spent the last hours of her life yesterday with lots of visitors and staff loving on her.   Later in the afternoon her breathing effort was becoming more labored.  I knew that it was time to let her go.  We believe in letting them go on a good day not a bad one if at all possible,  She had had a good day, waiting until today would have been a bad day.  So late yesterday afternoon I returned with her to the vet for our last time.   I held her in my arms as she took her last breath. Gina was a sweet loving old girl who  was so grateful to finally having a loving home.  She loved everyone.  We were so blessed to have been loved by her.  I will miss her purring and licking my arms. My heart is broken.
